Core Web Vitals and Ranking

Core Web Vitals and Ranking – In this article I discuss Core Web Vitals and ranking.

You will learn what Core Web Vitals are, why they are important for SEO, and what is their likely impact on your web page rankings.

What Are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are a set of metrics attempting to measure the experience of a user on a web page.

The main Core Web Vitals are Large Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).

Why Are They Important for SEO?

Google announced that Core Web Vitals will become a ranking factor by May 2021.

More recently Google has announced that in order to benefit in terms of rankings, a web page needs to do well on all three main metrics.

Google Search Console also changed its measurement from lower than (<) to lower than or equal.

Wix and Core Web Vitals

In a recent article published by, Wix scored very low on the Large Contentful Paint metric.

In the report, Wix scored lower than other Content Management Systems like WordPress.

Core Web Vitals and Ranking

When he was recently asked the question, Google’s John Mueller downplayed the impact of Core Web Vitals:

So just because your website is faster with regards to Core Web Vitals than some competitors doesn’t necessarily mean that come May you will jump to position number one in the search results.

We still require that relevance is something that should be kind of available on the site […]

So it’s not going to… destroy your site and remove it from the index if you have it wrong. It’s not going to catapult you from page ten to number one position if you get it right.
